I'd say 100% unequivocally yes. The steam deck control customization alone is worth it in my opinion. It's a great device that will give you a console like feel while giving you total freedom. And if you want to do something other than emulation or put windows on it in the future, you'd atleast have the option to do so The steam deck is way over qualified for emulation. You can get emulation handhelds for around $100 or less that can emulate most systems well. You’ll likely run into problems with emulating the Switch, but that’s only a so-so experience anyway on even the best hardware. Based on my experience, I'm guessing you've got the deck hooked up to a 4k display and are using the steam os mode to launch games. If so, retroarch is running in 4k and all your cores are going to run slow. If you go to desktop mode and set your display resolution to 1080p and launch the games from desktop mode, I bet you'll have better results.

If you want Windows, ROG Ally is better. I have used Steam Deck with windows for gaming and work stuff. I can say for sure it is not a friendly windows device. Many concern such as audio stop working or no output through hdmi, lacklustre gamepad support, TDP control non existent, and many others.
